Australia get major improvement for ODIs vs India – squads named for series

For the upcoming series against India, Mitchell Starc alongside uncapped batter Matthew Renshaw return to the Australia ODI squad.The selectors have also call back Mitch Owen and Matt Short, who were previously injured. Considering 2027 World Cup,this squad marks a rebuilding phase for ODI side of Australia.

For the upcoming white-ball series against India, Australian cricket selectors have announced their squads with Mitchell Starc making his return to International cricket and uncapped batter Matthew Renshaw earning a recall to the ODI squad. On Tuesday (October 7) the squads were disclosed for three ODI matches which will starting October 19 and the first two T20 internationals, as for next year’s T20 World Cup, Australia continue preparation.

After sitting out the South Africa series in August, Mitchell Starc, who recently retired from T20 internationals, returns to the squad. Ahead of the Ashes, he had been resting since the West Indies Test tour with his workload being carefully managed.

In the 15-man ODI squad, four new additions alongside Starc, including Matt Short, Renshaw, and Mitch Owen. Both Owen and Short were initially chosen for the South Africa series but due to injuries couldn’t participate in the that series – Owen was suffering a concussion during the T20 series, whereas Short was recovering from a rib cartilage fracture.

Renshaw and Owen stand self-assured to make their ODI debuts against India, following their excellent performances in domestic 50-over cricket. In the 2022 ODI squad for Pakistan, Renshaw was previously included as cover who scored 305 runs at an average of 50 for Queensland last season and showed remarkable form for Australia A against Sri Lanka A with scores of 80,106, and 62.

Following the retirements of Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis, Australia begin rebuilding their ODI side, looking ahead to 2027 World Cup. Mitchell Marsh will continue as ODI captain.

Selection chair George Bailey told “We have named a squad for the first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through sheffield shield cricket,”

“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
