It aims to align broader objectives of social and economic progress with sports and manipulating sports as a powerful tool for building the nation. The government of India on Thursday let out for public consultation a Draft National Sports Policy (NSP). According to NSP ” The policy adopts a multi-faceted strategy that addresses critical areas such as talent identification, infrastructure growth, nurturing, governance reform, and enhancing mass involvement,”

Considering India’s recent performances in major international games, including the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, the NSP feels to need to build on these achievements and create a sustainable structure for long-term success in sports.

Some of the key features of NSP are making a strong competitive structure, implement physical literacy initiatives, develop a robust talent identification and growth system, make strong governance and institutional framework, and to develop sports and physical literacy as crucial subjects in educational organizations in alignment with National Education policy 2020.

As India has shown the ambition to host the 2030 Youth Olympic and 2036 Summer Olympics, NSP aims to prepare” a plan for organizing major sports events, including various stakeholders as per example the Indian Olympic Association(IOA), NSFs, state governments, and private organization”.

The policy has target to position India as a “global sports tourism hub” by capitalizing on hosting of prime international sporting events.”It can generate substantial revenue and increase the country’s global image, inspire international participants and spectators, and remarkably boost its tourism sector, create job opportunity, and stimulate local economies.”

In order to strengthen the National sports Federations and other sports bodies, this policy wants to aim on ” operational efficiency, financial sustainability, professional management and transparency,”

“This will call for the improvement of national-level monitoring agencies to ensure seamless functioning and successful issue redressal mechanisms.”

The policy also proposes a revamped funding mechanism, including capabilities such as “Adopt an Athlete”, “Adopt a Venue”, “Adopt a District sports Program,” An independent body will be formed to strategize, supervise and execute funded activities, ensuring a collaborative process towards sports development.”
