22 – time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal’s eyes was moved to tears during the Spanish national anthem at the Davis Cup. This was his final tournament appearance. The 38-year-old tennis legend Rafael Nadal set to retire after the tournament. Nadal was chosen by Spain’s Davis cup captain David Ferrer to feature Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the opening singles match of the quarter-finals in Malaga. The Davis cup was the final chapter of Rafael Nadal’s 23-year career.
As Nadal has faced repetitive strain injury setbacks in recent years, which results leading to his decision to step away from professional tennis. This will be Rafael’s first singles match since his second-round loss at the Paris Olympics in July. Regardless of his fitness challenges, Rafael emphasized on Monday that he was not in Malaga to bid farewell but to help Spain secure their first Davis cup title since 2019.
