Businessman cum state cricket administrator Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been appointed as BCCI treasurer and BCCI on Sunday elected its new chief, former player along with advocate Devajit Saikia, the only person nominated to the top post of Board of control for cricket in India (BCCI).
The board of Control for Cricket in India told in a statement “Devajit Saikia is declared duly elected as the Secretary of BCCI”
Saikia,55, succeeds Jay Shah who vacant the position of BCCI chief to become chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the global governing body. Saikia was elected unopposed at Special General Meeting of BCCI in Mumbai. Businessman cum state cricket administrator Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been appointed as BCCI treasurer, BCCI added.
Saikia, who was already on the BCCI board as interim secretary appointed as the BCCI chief after Jay Shah’s departure last month to become chairman of the ICC. He began in administration by serving as general secretary of a cricket club in the north-eastern state of Assam under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. Himanta is now chief minister of Assam for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has governed India nationally since year 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the middle of the delay in announcing the squad for Champion Trophy 2025, a report noted that BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has disclosed that Champions Trophy squad for India will be announced on 18th or 19th January 2025. After the announcement of squad for upcoming five-match T20Is against England in India starting later this month now the entire focus has shifted to their yet-to-be-announced team for ODIs against the side and the Champions Trophy 2025. While India’s one-dayers against England begin on 6th February 2025, the ICC event is set to start on 19th of the month. During the wait for the squads announcement, Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president has given a big update on the announcement. On Sunday (12th January 2025) during an interaction with media Rajeev Shukla informed that the selection meeting for the Champions Trophy will be held on 18th or 19th January 2025.
