Virat Kohli hinted of Retiring from Test cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, In spite of a desire to lead again, the BCCI, aimed on the future, didn’t entertain it, earmarking Shubman Gill for leading the Indian team. As concern of form or leadership of team discussions, decision of Kohli came, means India will likely miss his presence at Number 4 in Tests.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia on many times, Virat Kohli gave many residue to his Team India colleagues of how ‘he is done’ with Test cricket.
During Border-Gavaskar Trophy not many of people took it seriously due to it was an exhausting tour for the Indian team where Virat Kohli, too, didn’t have a good time except one century early in the series. In full series out of nine matches Virat could manage only 190 runs and 100 of those came in a single innings.
The right-hander Virat Kohli fought after the early high and was nowhere close to the high standards he had set in that part of the world. Champions Trophy was the next big assignment for Indian team and the highs of the multi-nation tournament pushed the Test discussions back.
However, earlier the discussions for the England Test tour got underway, Virat Kohli reached out to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and told he wanted to call it a day in the longest format of cricket. It came as a shock to the fans of Virat Kohli who matters, who had him in the scheme of things at the minimum for England, Virat had made up his mind. Along with BCCI, Indian cricket fans outside of it wish him on that flight to England but situations is in Kohli’s favour now.
It is worth nothing that Virat Kohli expressed wish to lead the Indian team again but as the BCCI had an eye on the future, and wanted to brush a young leader for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle. As per media reported, Shubman Gill was set apart as the team leader for the future as the BCCI didn’t want to look back as far as leadership is concerned.
A source tracking developments had cleared “A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity has to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period. There can’t be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven’t been ideal for the team and the England series is very crucial,”
