Due to preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 that will held in February 2025 in Pakistan, the ODIs series against Sri Lanka will be extremely important for India as it will mark the beginning of preparations.
According to a Cricbuzz report there is some indication of availability of Rohit Sharma to play the ODI series against Sri Lanka.There are only six ODIs left before the Champions Trophy 2025,out of six three ODIs against Sri Lanka and three against England in January 2025.Hence Rohit Sharma wants to get some practice ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. If he will returns to the squad then he will naturally be the captain of the side.
This happen after Gautam Gambhir had requested to senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah to make themselves available for the ODI series against Sri Lanka as they would be getting a long break after the Sri Lanka tour. However, the Cricbuzz report states that the newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir did not configure this decision in a meeting with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee and chaired by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
However Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are unable to play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, if Rohit Sharma also miss out the series, then KL Rahul will be most likely player to lead the side. Due to personal reasons Hardik Pandya will not be the part of the ODI series, reports told. Rohit Sharma will not be part of the T20I series as he recently announced his retirement from T20Is.Suryakumar Yadav is selected new captain in place of Hardik Pandya according to Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee’s choice.
