Asia Cup 2025: Dream11 ban; Team India faces warning of losing another jersey sponsor ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Indian parliament’s both houses late on Thursday have banned online fantasy sports and gambling platforms, like Dream11, which was announced as lead sponsor of team India in July 2023 for a duration of three years. In the upcoming Asia Cup the Indian cricket team faces possibility of sporting jersey which will without a logo. Asia Cup will begin in the United Arab Emirates next month.

The sweeping bill bans online gambling platforms and fantasy sports, such as Dream11. Regarding the future of its association with India’s biggest fantasy sports gaming platform,the Board of Control for Cricket in India is yet to make an official announcement. Yet, secretary of the national governing body Mr. Devajit Saikia on Today told that the BCCI would adhere country’s law.

Saikia told “If it’s not permissible, we’ll not do anything. The BCCI will follow every policy of the country that is framed by the central government,”

Dream11, on its website on Friday posted a statement, noted that, following the bill passing, “cash games and contests have been discontinued”, but urged fans to “stay tuned”. On Friday other games remained online, with the bill still requiring to be formally corrected by the president before taking effect.

According to Indian government companies had emptied $2.3 billion per year from 450 million people.

The Sahara logo was spattered on jerseys of Indian team from 2001 to 2013 before the group faced the anger of SEBI for regulatory violations. Star India, guide sponsor from year 2014 to 2017, was subjected to a probe by the Competition Commission, and Oppo, which came onboard in 2017, exited the partnership early (2020) owning to financial constraints.

In 2020, Byju’s took over jersey sponsorship rights, but its association with Indian cricket finished on a caustic with the BCCI taking the edtech firm to court over payment defaults.
