First time in 148 years: Virat Kohli on cusp of breaking great world record

After seven months in the first ODI, star batter Virat Kohli is set to play his first international game with India knocked to take on Australia in Perth on Sunday. Earlier this year after retiring from Tests, the 36-year-old former India skipper became a one-format player. After India won the T20 World Cup in 2024,beating South Africa in the final in Barbados,Virat Kohli had retired from the shortest format of cricket. While future of his One day International also remains undetermined, Some reports advising that he might not be around for the 2027 World Cup, Virat Kohli is chasing a world record, which he may reach during the three-match ODI series against Australia.

For most centuries by a batter in a single format, Virat needs one hundred to break the record. He is currently secured with 51 centuries, equal with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who completed his career with 51 tons in Test cricket. In a single format of cricket,only Sachin and Virat – two players – have ever reached the landmark of scoring 50 or more hundreds in a single format.

Overall, In the list of international cricket history, Sachin Tendulkar is on the top with 100 tons (51 Tests, 49 ODIs) while Virat Kohli is on second position with 82 tons to his name (51 ODIs, 30 Tests, 1 T20Is).

Virat Kohli also succeed heavily in playing condition of Australia, having scored 1,327 runs in total 29 ODIs with an average of 51.03 and a strike rate of over 89, with his best score of 133* and five centuries and six fifties in 29 innings.

Against Australia Cricket Team, his last five innings are : 54, 56, 85, 54 and 84, which all are half-centuries. In Australia, his last five innings are : 104, 46, 21, 89 and 63. Virat also holds the record of most centuries by a visiting player Down under across all formats (17).

Kohli will also have the possibility to match record of Rohit Sharma for most ODI hundreds against Australia cricket team in Australia. Rohit Sharma leads the list with four centuries, while Virat has three so far.
