Pacer Harshal Patel of Punjab Kings bagged the purple cap in IPL 2024 season for picking 24 wickets in 14 matches.
Since the foundation of the Indian Premier League in year 2008, fans have been treated to some spectacular bowling performances throughout the competition. The purple cap is bestowed to the bowlers with the highest wickets after the finish of the tournament while it regularly changes hands during the matches.
This cap is the biggest honour for any bowlers taking part in the tournament, as it showcases consistency and wicket-taking ability, the most real, in the shortest format of the cricket.
Bowler’s Dream Award in IPL
As like IPL Orange Cap that rewards to batters, it has been a intense battle among the bowlers to get their hand on the purple cap. Last IPL season IPL 2024, the purple cap was formally presented to Harshal Patel as he has taken 24 wickets in 14 matches. Harshal Patel was closely followed by KKR spinner Varun Chakravarthy and Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who scalped 24 and 21 wickets respectively.
The Purple Cap Saga
In IPL 2008 Pakistan’s bowler Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to be awarded the Purple Cap. As he has taken 22 wickets in 11 matches for the team Rajasthan Royals. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler among the list of winners of the purple cap to have won it consecutively in year 2016 and 2017.
