After sustaining the neck injury on Day 2 of the first India vs South Africa Test, Shubman Gill had to be admitted to a Kolkata hospital. Later, he was discharged. Ahead of the second Test against South Africa starting November 22, he reached Guwahati with the team without wearing a neck brace.

As per news agency PTI, Gill probably requires at least 10 days to fully recover and then finish his rehabilitation to be match-ready. The reasonable step for selectors would be to rest him from the ODI series beginning November 30 in Ranchi. He will return for the T20s against South Africa.

After Shreyash Iyer’s on-field injury, he is far from fit, the last thing Shubman Gill wishes is a third captaincy contender in Axar Patel or KL Rahul, even if it means only in a stop-gap role.
