For India, who start their second innings at 174/2 with captain Shubman Gill (78*) and KL Rahul (87*) both of them still unbeaten, rain may be both a spoiler and a saviour.

However, irregular rain breaks – the more likely scenario – may break the batsmen’s rhythm and create stop-start conditions that assist England’s pace attack with a relatively fresh second new ball due in 17 overs.
