IPL 2025 new rules: Impact players, two balls & saliva use, here the list how IPL changes this year

As IPL 2025 comes nearer, the BCCI has introduced remarkable rule changes including the raising of the saliva ban, the use of a second ball for night time matches, the continuation of the Impact player rule, and expanded DRS usage. These rule changes are set to add to match dynamics beginning this season, commencing on 22th March 2025.

As the IPL 2025 approaches, the BCCI on Thursday held a meeting of franchises skippers and referees.

A meeting which was held at BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai, many significant rule changes were discussed and also approved including lifting of the saliva ban and continuation of the Impact player rule. These new rules are expected to bring exciting dynamics to the IPL 2025, yet even change them to an extent.

1. Saliva ban lifted

Most remarkable changes is the cancellation of the ban on the use of saliva to shine the cricket ball. During the COVID-19 pandemic as part of health and safety protocols, this ban had been imposed. After discussions, the BCCI has decided to allow players to use saliva once again.

2. Introduction of a second ball

The BCCI will implement a rule to produce a second ball in the second innings of evening games. After the 11th over this new ball will come into play.

3. Impact player rule to continue

The IPL will continue to implement the Impact player rule, which permits teams during a match to substitute one player each, as already approved by BCCI.

4. DRS for height and off-side wides

The Decision Review system (DRS) will be expanded to include calls for height wides and wides outside the off-stump. Umpires while making these decisions using Hawk-Eye technology and ball tracking.
