Head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI) Mahela Jayawardene opened up on his team’s member Jasprit Bumrah condition as the India speedster continues to be out on the sidelines from the back-related injury issued he picked up in January 2025 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
If talking about his full fitness Bumrah has not made any significant moves in regaining his full fitness as yet and two weeks back in Dubai during Champions Trophy title MI pacer was also out of action under Rohit Sharma. Mahela Jayawardene told MI are awaiting the updates On Bumrah with anticipation as he charters his recovery at the National Cricket Academy’s centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
“Jasprit is with NCA, and just started the process there. Will await their feedback on him. Progress will be monitored on day-to-day basis. Not having him is a challenge and the world’s best bowler is always an advantage for us,” Jayawardene said reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The Ex. Sri Lanka skipper also told that the team will attempt to tweak and shuffle combinations early in the tournament without Bumrah. “He gives us a different element for trying things, so that in the early season we can experiment.”
In January 2025, in Sydney, Jasprit Bumrah not played since the fifth test against Australia, when he walked off for scans on Day 2. Former Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond had recently warned India and Bumrah of not bearing excessive workload in the future.
Bond said ESPNcricinfo “He is too valuable for the next World Cup and stuff. So you’d be looking at five Tests in England, I wouldn’t want to be playing him in any more than two in a row. Coming out of the back end of the IPL into a Test match is going to be a huge risk. And so how do they manage that is going to be a key,”
“So that’s hard because he is your best bowler, but if he has another injury in the same spot, that could be a career-ended, potentially, because I’m not sure you can have surgery on that spot again.”
Bumrah was highest wicket-taker in 2024, nabbing 20 scalps in 13 matches.
