Hat-tricks always hold a special place in the game of cricket. This is because unlike centuries and now even double centuries, which have emerged to be quite common, hat-tricks are rare events, and a bowler’s success is scarce in the game.

With cricket being a batters game, bowlers have nothing among the rules for themselves; hence, their success is considered an epitome. With Patty Cummins striking with a hat-trick against Bangladesh followed by a hat-trick chance in the following game against Afghanistan, before David Warner dropped a sitter denying him consecutive hat-tricks.

The Aussie World Cup winning skipper has struck three times against Bangladesh in the opening game of the Super-8. The Australian pacer dismissed Hridoy, Mahmadullah, and Mehdi Hasan to complete his hat-trick.

With Cummins’ latest antics, several bowlers resurface who have struck thrice on different occasions in both T20Is and ODIs.

Thisara Perera

The Sri Lankan all-rounder is an unlikely name on the list; he registered his ODI hat-trick back in 2012 against Pakistan, as he dismissed Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, and Sarfaraz Ahmed.

After that, he turned to T20Is and took his first hat trick in 2016 against India and dismissed the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Hardik Pandya to enter the elite list of players.

Wanindu Hasaranga

When it comes to hat tricks, the Lankans have always seemed to step up, though Australia remains the side with the most number of hat tricks. The modern-generation Lankan spinner is considered one of the finest spinners in the world, featuring in leagues around the world.

Hasaranga picked his first set of three wickets against Zimbabwe in ODIs, and later in 2021, he went on to dismiss Markram, Bavuma, and Pretorius in the World Cup.

Kagiso Rabada

The South African maestro is undoubtedly one of the greatest of the generation; he went on to secure his hat-trick in ODIs by dismissing Tamim, Mahmadullah, and Litton Das back in 2015.

The Protea quick then wreaked havoc against England in T20Is in 2021 when he picked Morgan, Woakes, and Jordan in his 3 consecutive deliveries.

Brett Lee

The legendary fast bowler from Australia went on to be the first ever bowler in the history of the game to have taken a hat trick in both an ODI as well as a T20I game.

He secured his first ODI hat-trick in the World Cup 2003 when he got 3 wickets against Kenya and then secured 3 wickets against Bangladesh in the inaugural T20 World Cup.

Lasith Malinga

This name is not unknown when it comes to bowling with insanity. Imagine a legendary pacer with multiple ODI hat tricks alongside T20 hat tricks as well. Also with several compelling 4-wicket hauls, only one name strikes our mind: Malinga.

Known for his round arm action and insane unplayable yorkers, the Lankan pacer has picked 3 ODI hat tricks, the first being a 4 ball 4 wickets against South Africa in the 2007 ODI World Cup. His next two followed in the next World Cup against Kenya and Australia.

His first hat trick in international T20s came against Bangladesh before he once again took a 4-ball 4-down spell against the Kiwis in 2019 and went on to be the only bowler in the history of the game to have taken 4 wickets in 4 balls twice.

Euro 2024: Dutch defence too firm for French forwards?
Netherlands firm their defence to resist early French entry into the Round of 16 (image: Opta Analyst)

The Dutch and the French both will probably look to advance into the last 16 of Euro 2024. France has been named as one of the top contenders for being crowned in Germany. The Dutch are also expected to perform well under Koeman.

The two teams will take on each other this Friday night in the Euro 2024, and this game may seal the fate early for the winning side. However, both these sides are contrasting in their specialized areas. While the Dutch are firm with their rock-solid defence line led by Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk, the French side are known for their antics in the opponents’ half as their forward line is led by the stunning Kylian Mbappe.

France could not manifest much in their opening game against Austria; the much-appreciated forward line comprising star players Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe, and Antoine Griezmann failed to produce anything special. Their most experienced campaigner, N’golo Kante, though, produced some great chances in the midfield, but the forwards could not advance any further.

On the other hand, in their first outing for the Netherlands against Poland, the Oranje showcased some stunning football in their defensive half. Led by van Dijk in the central defensive role, the Dutch have some excellent talents from both the flags, be it the Manchester City star Nathan Ake or the Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries.

Alongside Mbappe, France will have the likes of Griezmann, Thuram, Giroud, Dembele, and Coman, but despite their efforts on the field, the Oranje defence stands firm as they have the most comprehensive defence line of Euro 2024. Virgil van Dijk will lead his great defensive heads to put on a stellar effort to resist the French force.

However, the French backline has never seemed confident, while the Netherlands forwards have always been trying to facilitate the opportunities they have seen during their run of play. In an overall quest, it seems the Koeman-led Dutch side will be considered the heavyweights over the probable Euro 2024 favourites France, but for the favourites to fire, they will hope to see their other players stand alongside Kylian Mbappe.

Euro 2024: Commanding Spanish domination sinks defending champions Italy

Spain has made their commanding way into the Round of 16 of Euro 2024. After a confident 3-0 win over Croatia, they left from where they had left and fired a one-sided dominance against the defending champions.

Italy has been considered the weakest defending champions since Greece, and this was visible in their clueless performance against a dominant Spain.

Either half seemed going in Spain’s favor, as Morata and Ruiz both were offered chances in the first half but they were denied by Donnarruma. Pedri and Williams however missed simple-headed chances in the first half; otherwise, Spain would have taken a 2-0 lead early on in the first half.

Both the Spanish scorers against Croatia were denied by Italy’s only formidable performer, Donnarruma. Not even a single Italian player posed any probable threat to the Spanish goal; hence, the Spanish defenders didn’t have much to do, especially for the centre-backs.

Cucurella posed a serious threat down the left wing as he kept the Italian mid-fielders busy with his cut-ins. The Spanish midfield gave a far for dominant performance as Pedri controlled the game, providing many key passes, though his only flaw remained as he failed to score early in both halves. Fabian Ruiz also seemed eccentric until he was taken off, though he was denied an opportunity early on in the first half.

Though Morata was repeatedly denied by the Azzurri goalie, yet the two other Yamal and Williams were electric in both halves. Yamal’s curler was probably the best attempt of the night at the Italian goal; however, Donnarruma kept it out. Williams despite missing an easy chase early on almost made up for it with his long-range screamer.

The Atletico Madrid superstar led to Spain’s glory in the game, as it was his cross that led to the own goal by Calafiori and went on to be the winner for La Roja. A well-deserved victory that took them straight into the last 16, leaving behind the defending champions despite the goalkeeper’s valiant efforts.

England fail to advance early into Last 16 after draw against Denmark (image: Sporting News)

England, who have not found major success in the Euros in recent years, was expected to be the best side of this Euro 2024, as they have a stunning set of players. This is Southgate’s last dig at the Euros before he leaves this stunning English side.

Though England escaped with a narrow win against Serbia, they could not hold on to the same against the Danish side. England’s Golden Boy, Jude Bellingham, stepped forward and scored their first tournament goal, which earned them a win against the Serbian side.

While teams like Germany and Spain have already stepped into the last 16, favorites England could not make their place into the Round of 16 and will have to ensure a win against Slovenia.

England dominated against the Danish side early on, as Saka and Walker kept threatening the Danish goal. Their hard work paid off, as Walker made a surprise run from the back to collect the ball and Saka deflected his pass onto Kane, who made a finish as clean as you like.

However, England’s goal advantage seemed to be a curse to them as Denmark seemed charged up from then, till the end of the first half. Eriksen and co. started to retain possession and make extravagant efforts at the English goal before Sporting CP midfielder Hjulmand pulled onto a stunner from 28 yards that beat Pickford to let Denmark level the scores.

The second half never seemed to be a game among the two great teams of European football. The game went on to be only physical, as they never made chances come true; however, the defensive work of Denmark is praised, though the English are criticized for their lack of proficiency on the ball.

If You Like It: Euro 2024: Hosts Germany name themselves as the first side into the Round of 16

With this draw, Southgate’s side will be threatened even for elimination in case they lose against Slovenia. Though unlikely yet, England’s loose performance has raised several concerns for the coach, and the great talents will also be seeking to restore their honor.

India Vs Afghanistan : Rohit Sharma credits Jasprit Bumrah after pounding win in Super 8s

Rohit Sharma after Jasprit Bumrah for particular compliment singled out him for his starring role in India’s impressive win against Afghanistan. With the help of India’s star Bumrah bowling attack India secured a 47-run victory.

Suryakumar Yadav awesome performance 28-ball 53 to India to 181-8 from their 20 overs, but Bumrah’s bowling Afghanistan’s top order, finishing with figures of 3-7 as India moved top of Group one before Australia face Bangladesh.

Rohit Sharma told to reporters ” Everyone came in and did their job, that’s critical and we dwell on it. SKY( Suryakumar and Hardik’s partnership was critical at that point.”

” He is willing to show responsibility and he’s been doing it for years.”

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan affected, as did the tournament’s leading wicket-taker Fazalhaq Farooqi as they have taken three wickets each. It was not enough, though, as Afghanistan were dismissed for 34 off the final ball- Arshdeep Singh taking 3-36.

Cristiano Ronaldo needs to find prime completing form to justify place in Portugal’s starting XI

Cristiano Ronaldo needs to find prime completing form to justify place in Portugal’s starting XI

39-years-old Cristiano Ronaldo have shown a couple of moments of fine touch but the goal-scoring abilities needed the finishing bite, timing and power that made him special in his key. Portugal pushed past a Valiant Czech Republic via goals made possible because of their opposer’s mistakes. There were moments of fine touch, specially in the 1st half of the game. He rolled back the years with a slick backheel pass to Vitinha.

He was playing 6th straight Euro since his debut in football in the 2004 edition of the championships, a total of 20 years. His goal scoring form that has kept Ronaldo from receiving the same sort of flak that someone like Romelu Lukaku of Belgium has to face due to his uncertain finishing skills, the latest coming after his misses against Slovakia in a match that the Red Devils lost 1-0

On Tuesday(18 June 2024) night, Ronaldo’s finishing was a cause for concern for the Portugal side and their coach Roberto Martinez, who will have much to think about after the final whistle.

The players did create enough chances for their charm, which if he was in his prime form would all result in goals in the match largely dominated by Portugal. But for a striker who has spent 18months in the Saudi League where the level of struggle is lower, it’s going to take a lot more than a few international friendlies for Ronaldo to hit his march.

The near-misses

Case in point, in the 8th minute of game Portugal’s Rafael Leao cut inside from the left and floated ball towards Ronaldo who was completely perfect. The Veteran striker who must have except Leao to move into the box instead of crossing, find time of his header wrong and the ball went well wide of the Czech goalkeeper.

In next 32nd minute, Ronaldo, who looked to be in a tight offside situation, was set free into the box by a beautiful directed pass by ex-Manchester united teammate Bruno Fernandes. Ronaldo shot was saved by the Jindrich Staneks as another opportunity used by.

Again in first half Ronaldo came very close with a turn and a low sharp shot but was kept out by the goalie. The missing of chances also continue in the second half also.

A goal from Lukas gave put the Czech Republic in the lead. Ronaldo almost rescued himself after unacknowledged performance throughout the 2nd half by hitting a bullet header into the conflict’s bar, the rebound of which was headed into the net by Diogo Jota. But VAR concluded that the Al Nassr player was offside so the goal would not stand.

The Euro 2024 is underway, and Germany has made their intentions clear as they square off to the Round of 16, quite early after their huge win against Scotland was followed by a 2-0 win over Hungary on Wednesday.

The hosts till now have put on an irresistibly commendable performance and have sparked hopes in the minds of their spectators, who seemed underconfident due to their team’s weak form since the 2018 World Cup.

With Kroos keeping aside his international call-off and returning to the German squad, he has seemed to bind the German forwards and defense line together, while he is well supported by Gundogan and Wirtz.

The constant surprise from Germany’s Euro campaign continues to surprise with his stellar, unstoppable form, as he hit his second goal of the tournament from a fine close-range finish. Who else would this be other than Bayern Munich turned Germany’s golden boy, Jamal Musiala?

Alongside several European youngsters, which include Bellingham, Yemal, and many more, the German legend in making, Musiala seems to be the best in this Euro so far.

However, though the hosts took a huge stride into the last 16, their entry was not easy as they faced Hungary, who were hungry for a win to keep themselves alive in the Euro. The one-sidedness of the contest against Scotland seemed to be resisted by some extraordinary efforts from the Hungarian players.

Manuel Neuer, Germany’s most experienced campaigner of the Euro 2024, was much busier than he would have expected to be, as he made early tackles and even was threatened by a rocket free-kick of Szoboszlai. However, Bayern mate Kimmich took guard to keep up the hard work of the German goalkeeper when he denied Hungary an obvious goal with his clearance.

With some good work late in the game in the defensive areas and great advancement in forward runs, Germnay’s back line gave all they could in the game. So did the German midfielders, as Andrich denied several chances to advance for the Hungarians, and Kross played all corners of the game, as he kept sprawling from the defense line to his playmaking role near the penalty box.

Havertz and Wirtz’s involvement in the game would be arguable as they did not seem to serve their chances, though Wirtz was seen often re-positioning the opposition with his change of flags switching wings.

In the meantime, Musiala and Gundogan were the most formidable performers, threatening the Hungarian goal multiple times and attacking with the ball from the central area of the box. The game passed, but Hungary remained clueless about how to resist the young German forward, as he displayed some world-class football.
