Rohit Sharma, while attending a press conference prior to the World Cup, revealed his earnest appeal to the present India Head coach, Rahul Dravid, to extend his stay in the position with the Men in Blue. However, he also stated that Dravid has made his intentions very clear that he will be leaving the team after his recent contract ends.

“I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously, there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well. But yeah, I’ve personally enjoyed my time with him. I’m sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It’s been great working with him, and I hope… I’m not going to say anything, actually. I’m not going to say anything.”

Rohit said this to the press

It is inevitable that the skipper-coach duo shared outstanding chemistry on and off the field. Rohit also said that he played under Dravid as a youngster, with him in the early days of his career, and now under his mentorship and guidance. Playing under all three conditions, he has learned immensely from the veteran and has spoken highly of his tremendous abilities.

Dravid will be last seen as team India head coach in the T20 World Cup 2024, after which the new India coach will take charge from July onwards. Dravid, as known by all cricket fans in India and abroad, has had a stunning work load throughout his splendid career, featuring both as a player and a coach.

During his playing days, Dravid was considered one of the most dependable men on the field, often considered one of the most underrated yet finest servants of Indian cricket. His contributions have no bar, as he has rescued India in several tough matches and has served to be a keeper to fill in the void before the great MS Dhoni arrived.

“He’s shown a lot of great determination throughout his career, and that is something that, when he came here as a coach, I wanted to learn from him. It’s been very fruitful; other than the big silverware, I think we’ve won all the major tournaments and series and all of that.

Rohit kept showering praise on the Indian coach

However, the Indian skipper, even for once, didn’t seem overconfident about sending the maestro away with an ICC trophy to his name. Rohit repeatedly hinted at his new game and new approach strategy, saying they are just looking at one game at a time.

“I’m sure everyone in the team has their own way of dealing with tournaments like the World Cup. And I’m sure they’ll make the right calls as well. But for me, I think it’s important not to look too far ahead. Just think about what we need to do tomorrow. Play the game well, and then take it from there. We won’t think too much and put ourselves under pressure.”

The Indian captain also showed immense faith in his other senior campaigners

Dravid also claimed that India has undeniably played great cricket at all ICC tournaments. They were the most convincing performers since Dravid’s first T20 World Cup in 2022 as the Indian head coach. But despite all this, Dravid made a clear indication that he would not claim the position of head coach further post the end of his contract after the T20 World Cup.

The United States of America is probably the most dominant among the underdogs, despite being the first-time hosts. The USA started on a strong note as they comfortably won a high-scoring match against Canada.

When continuously said to be a dominant team, Pakistan will still face harsh opposition from the hosts, as the cricketing world is quite aware of their undeniable form.

Pakistan has faced serious trouble with training sessions, as most of them have been washed out due to heavy rains. Prior to the World Cup, they were busy playing bilateral series against the English and Ireland in the United Kingdom. On the contrary, the United States has adapted well to home conditions and looked quite convincing in their opening game.

Speaking of form, the USA will be the most confident side after their dominance over Bangladesh and Canada, while Pakistan suffered a one-sided series defeat at the hands of England.

Despite having a star-studded bowling unit, the Pakistani pacers are not aware of the pitch conditions yet. On the other hand, the United States played a good first game in the opening fixture against Canada.

The pitch conditions in Dallas are batting-friendly as compared to the disgustingly tough tracks in New York and Barbados. But leaving aside the Pakistani duo Rizwan-Babar, their entire batting unit has failed to provide any standout performances. Even the experienced Fakhar Zaman has not been able to convince anyone with his batting antics.

“You know, it’s T20. Once we have a good 30–40 minutes on the field, you never know. We can take the game away.”

Monank Patel on his team’s chances against Pakistan

Pakistan would miss the likes of their all-rounder Imad Wasim, who was their most dependable player for the T20 World Cup campaign and was brought in by the side, citing his immense experience in the United States. With a confirmed injury, he is ruled out for the first few games.

Early seam and bounce of the track might be helpful for the pacers with the new ball, but Pakistan might face a backlash in the mid-overs as USA’s Aaron Jones will look to dominate the out-of-knick Shadab and the inconsistent Haris Rauf.

Owing to the lack of form, Pakistan might not be the one-sided favorites, as the dominant hosts might look to take over the Asian giants with their immense self-confidence and outstanding form of players anchored by the international experience of Corey Anderson.

It can be easily said that playing the Irish in New York seemed to be a preparatory match for the clash of the giants on Sunday. India took on Ireland and went on to secure an easy win in their opening match of the T20 World Cup.

However, despite their team’s inevitable performance, even the Indian batters did not look relentless, as they struggled early on to score at a lower rate in the powerplay, only until the Indian skipper broke the shackles and took the game away with his ever-attacking play.

Under such difficult conditions, playing against the most deadly pace attack in the world would not be easy. Rohit retired hurt while facing a challenging bouncer from Irish pacer Josh Little. With such an uneven bounce and irregular pace variations on the pitch, batting conditions are extremely tough at the Nassau Cricket Stadium.

“I don’t know what to expect from the pitch, to be honest, but we will prepare as if the conditions are going to be like this,”

Rohit’s take on the unpredictability of the New York pitch

From the matches between South Africa and Sri Lanka, it was clearly indicated that the pitch is highly unpredictable, but it was also indicative of its largely favorable conditions for pace bowling. India hence came up with better pace bowling conditions alongside Pandya and even dropped master spinner Kuldeep Yadav to increase their depth in batting.

Former English skipper Vaughan seemed disgusted as he called the New York track to be highly substandard and so unacceptable—a track unfit for playing the World Cup.

“This is an excellent pitch in New York. The idea was to get the American audience hooked on Test cricket disguised as T20.”

Wasim Jaffer went on to use sarcasm for the pitches at USA

Bumrah, who won the Man of the Match award for his brilliant spell of 2 for 6, also claimed that the pitch is very different from the general tracks he plays on. He also agreed that bowling under these conditions was what he enjoyed the most.

“Coming from India, when you see the ball seaming and doing quite a bit, with good bounce and pace, you’d never complain when there’s help for the bowlers,”

said Bumrah when talking of the behavior of the track

Just like Bumrah, Pakistan is tanked with a versatile and unstoppable pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah, alongside the experienced campaigner Mohammed Amir. On such a track, these four will trouble the Indian batters, as we should anticipate more rattling of stumps, 3-fers, and 5-fers than any kind of batting eminence.

When it comes to ICC tournaments, no team is seen to be as promising as the majestic side from the Kangaroo Islands. The Aussies have been at the top of their game since their dominance in the World Cup last year.

The Men in Yellow have been the best international side, securing their high standards internationally, both in the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup in 2023. After being the champions in the longest format of the game and being crowned World Champions for the sixth time in the history of the World Cup.

Australia began their World T20 campaign on Thursday in Barbados against Oman, who had already initiated their campaign against Namibia, which ended in an exciting super-over in a low-scoring thriller, later securing a win for the African side.

The Aussies made it to the finals back in 2010, when the T20 World Cup took place in the West Indies, before losing the finals to Collingwood’s England. They ended their trophy drought in the tournament only in 2021. However, in their own soil, they, despite an equally brilliant showdown, ended their World Cup campaign in the group stage.

Australia have faced some early setbacks this year as the players were given a desired break after the IPL, and the marquee players—Starc, Cummins, and Head—might even not be seen featuring in the less crucial matches early on in the World Cup. Yet they remain a masterclass side, with Marsh captaining the Aussies for the first time in a major ICC event.

Australia would be looking to secure a hat-trick, especially to say the best possible farewell to their most dependable player of the era, David Warner. Warner marks the end of his international career in the next few weeks; this will be his last step onto the field before he bids goodbye to international cricket and Australia.

The Aussies would be hoping to record the unstoppable form of Travis Head, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc; alongside them, they would also hope the remaining tally of great players in Stoinis, Green, and Marsh would restore form. Warner, who is in his last World Cup appearance, would look to perform in the most convincing manner.

Australia would look to start their World Cup campaign on a strong note against Oman this Thursday, before they look to consolidate their position in the Super-8 with further wins later in the tournament.

Rohit Sharma wants to leave a impression on next generation

As Rohit Sharma is leading the Ninth ICC Men’s T20 World cup, Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma talked about his aim to leave a mark for the younger generation. Rohit is only one of two players who play all editions of the T20 world cup.

“It is quite exciting to playing another T20 world cup ” Rohit Sharma told to the ICC recently.

” I never thought about it, honestly speaking , But it is nice having played all the T20 World cups. And I have enjoyed every bit of it. When you come to ICC tournaments, it’s always exciting , and it brings a lot of new challenges.”

Rohit Sharma started his T20 world cup journey in 2007 and scored half-century in his first-ever innings to win the player of the Match award in a crunch game against South Africa.

“I think the first thing that comes to my mind is the bowl-out that we had against Pakistan” Rohit said. “But that’s also a lot to do with how the players have each country and the players have evolved with the game and taken it to the next level “

The first thing that come to his mind from the tournament was the bowl-out against Pakistan in 2007,the 37-year-old Rohit Sharma told.

” So it was quite exciting for us to have a crack at it and come out on top eventually. And I still remember that after our normal training, we use to train for bowl-outs, which was quite exciting. Everyone used to participate in that bowl-out.”

Honestly speaking, when it started, we had no clue about how it’s going to make a mark on world cricket. Now that we sit back after playing the first inaugural world cup, which was in 2007,and now we are in 2024, 17 years have passed by.

Skipper Rashid Khan’s immense trust in his star-studded batting lineup

Rashid Khan has been appointed as the captain of the Afghanistan national cricket team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. The Afghans have been the recent favourites among underdogs, as they have raised the eyebrows of many heavyweight nations on several occasions.

Speaking of their recent success, the Afghans had an unimaginable World Cup in India last year as they swept off teams like defending champions England and the star-studded Pakistan side. It would not be wrong to say that Afghanistan once seemed to be the most deserving contenders for a semi-final spot, but in their way stood Glenn Maxwell and an innings that would be an example for centuries to come.

“We were very close in the last World Cup to being in the semis. We were just one game away from being in the semis, and that’s where I feel like the belief started that nothing is impossible for us as a team”

Rashid said on being questioned about their World Cup campaign

However, despite their endless success, they have been single-handedly led by their bowlers. Other than frontline spinners Rashid Khan, Mujeeb, and Noor Ahmed, their pacers have also delivered at times of need. And Afghanistan has also looked to build their dominance using their key bowlers.

To everyone’s surprise, Rashid Khan, the new skipper, denied the team’s overreliance on bowlers and said that their batters have now played leagues around the world and are now confident enough to chase totals as big as 200 in their 20 overs.

Rashid showed great faith in batters Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Azmatullah Omarzai and said their dominant performances in T20 leagues like the CPL and their impact and participation in the Indian Premier League have given them abundant exposure to handle the pressure of international games.

“I think we have that kind of batting line-up where we can say it’s fine if there is a target of 200 as well on a wicket. We have that kind of ability, skill, and talent that we can express on the ground and chase. T20 cricket is all about mindset. As long as you have the right mindset and the belief that we can do anything, anything is possible.

Rashid’s confidence was reflected in his statements, as he commended his team’s batting expertise

Rashid mentioned that he and his bowlers will look to provide firm support to their batters. This time around, Afghanistan will be seen expressing itself as the even more splendid side with a great touch of both their batters and bowlers.

Afghanistan is in Group C with the West Indies, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Uganda. They will initiate their World Cup campaign against debutant Uganda on the 4th of this month.

Wise Wiese guides Namibia to victory in a low-scoring thriller

In an early World Cup encounter, Namibia played Oman to begin their campaign. With either side in the hunt for a stable start, Oman was put to the test first against Namibia.

Bowling first, Namibia dominated with early wickets and broke the back of the Oman batting order. They never seemed to be back on track as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were all out in the 20th over with 2 balls left for a low score of 109.

Under not very batting-friendly conditions at Bridgetown, Namibia set off on a steady start, and the game looked to be on their side until the 18th over arrived. It was then that Oman pacer Mehran Khan bowled a wicket-maiden and later went on to defend just five runs in the final over of the game. It was Mehran who led the Asian side to the super-over.

Game turning death over spell by the Oman pacer

However, the heroism of Mehran Khan went all in vain as David Wiese, the South African turned Namibian veteran, kept his calm and took Namibia into the super-over.

In the super-over, Wiese came to an end with skipper Erasmus, and both batters scored an unbeaten 21 runs. Wiese dug the wide yorker and managed to get a boundary of the first ball before hitting the second ball for a six-over wide long on. The skipper, on the other hand, wrapped up a perfect super-over with two consecutive boundaries.

The 39-year-old took the responsibility on his shoulders to defend the seemingly great total in the super-over. Mixing up his pace and length for the deliveries, Wiese restricted Oman to a 10-run over and won the match for Namibia superiorly.

Namibia landed their first win in this year’s T20 World Cup, though Oman also made a very convincing effort, and either team should be praised for their inevitable impact in the contest.

The West Indies, the most probable side in the shortest format of the game, have now had a long trophy drought in ICC tournaments since their last famous win against England in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2016. They had even failed to qualify for the main tournament of the 50-over World Cup held last year in India.

Despite their underwhelming performances and lack of composure, the co-hosts are still considered one of the favorites for the T20 World Cup in 2024. Cricket fans would want the mighty men from the Caribbean islands to bounce back this year.

However, nothing started as expected for the West Indies team, as they failed to dominate an infirm Papua New Guinea in their opening match of the World Cup. On Sunday, the West Indies bowlers did a fair enough job to restrict the newcomers to a low total of 136.

Such a low total seemed to be a piece of cake for the big hitters from the island nation. Despite a slow track and the early wicket of Charles, the windies were on track with the chase until Pooran fell to John Kariko at the start of the 9th over. This was when the PNG spinners started to squeeze the West Indies middle-order as they ended 97/5 at the end of the 15th.

However, despite their early fall, West Indies batter Roston Chase kept his calm and showed a glimpse of his experience when he shattered the hopes of the newbies and denied them their first-ever win in the ICC T20 World Cup. This is where PNG failed to capitalize on the early upset due to a lack of international experience.

“So, it was just that for me, and then backing myself in the end to really take it deep. And then, as you said, I put my foot on the gas. Obviously, we had the likes of Shepherd and Russell to come, so I never had any doubt that we would be able to get away with the ball in the end. So that was just my mindset.”

Chase seemed quite confident about the chase as he said this at the post-match interview

Though the West Indian side chased the total in the 19th over with Chase and Russell taking them over the line, they would lose the status of being the top contenders for the World Cup 2024 after this game.

Protea powerhouse against diverse Sri Lanka in the battle of ICC underdogs: Despite being one of the finest sides in world cricket, Proteas have always been the underachievers in the ICC tournaments. The Lankans, on the other hand, were undoubtedly considered one of the most heavyweight sides of the format since its starting days, but having won the T20 World Cup 10 years ago in 2014, they have failed to even make it to the final four of any major ICC tournament.

South Africa’s recent form in ICC tournaments

Though South Africa has had a conventional run into the semis of the 50-over World Cup in 2015 and last year in 2023, they would need to be reminded of their lack of dominance in the bigger stage of the game’s shortest format.

Since the start of 2023, the African side has had a terrible record in T20s, losing nine of their 11 completed T20s, the most recent one at the hands of the co-hosts just days before the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka has, however, managed three wins in a row before the World Cup, but all of them came from low-rated teams like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan, which lack their most comprehensive set of players. Hence, both teams cannot be expected to perform overwhelmingly in the upcoming World Cup.

A neck-to-neck contest between the two underperforming sides

However, the Protea’s taking on the Lankans would be an interesting contest as the teams have contradicting strengths and weaknesses.
While the Protea batters are pumped up with confidence after having dominating form in the last World Cup in India and a convincing IPL season, the Lankan attack comprises an amazing blend of hostile pacers and tricky spinners who would look to have their chances on the slow tracks of New York.

Led by the most experienced campaigner, Quinton de Kock, at the top, they will look to dominate in the batting front, expecting their informed player, Hendricks, to perform at the top. Scoring quick runs is not a reason to worry, as their middle order is lined by power-hitters Miller, Klaasen, and Stubbs, who have had a terrific season in franchise cricket.

Sri Lanka would be eager to bowl first on a track like New York, especially with the likes of Pathirana, Madushanka, and Thusara, along with a well-equipped spin attack comprising skipper Hasaranga and Theekshana. Lacking big-hitters at the end of the innings and underwhelming performances from the middle order, the bowlers are Sri Lanka’s only hope in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Hence said that the World Cup will witness Protea powerhouse against the diverse Sri Lanka in the battle of ICC underdogs.

However, other than these known facts, either team’s dominance would depend on the behaviour of the track and also on the return of their major players from injury. South Africans would look to play with a ton-percent fit Kagiso Rabada, who will spearhead their pace attack, while the men from the subcontinent would once again pin hopes on their key spinner Hasaranga.
