Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly told Shreyas Iyer should have been in England with India Test squad simply because of his current form in all formats. When Sourav Ganguly was the captain of Team India and even the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL,he was one of the biggest advocates of Ajit Agarkar. Ajit Agarkar has distributed memorable performances under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly but none special than except his six-wicket haul in the second innings in Adelaide in which India won a famous win against Australia in year 2003. Therefore fond was Saurav Ganguly of Ajit Agarkar that he didn’t consider his KKR team to be at full strength upto Agarkar’s injury in the inaugural edition of IPL tournament in year 2008.In this year after Agarkar played his last international match. Cut to 2025, there is nothing to suggest a crack in the Gauguly-Agarkar relationship but the former Indian skipper surely did not bashful away from referring fingers at the Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee for dropping Shreyas Iyer from Test squad of India for the England tour.
Last time when India toured England Shreyas Iyer was a part of India’s middle-order, disappeared from the Test series due to his struggles against the short-pitched deliveries. Shreyas Iyer, a right-hander, made a strong statement by scoring heavily in ODIs, which return him as one of India’s top run-scorers in both the World Cup in 2023 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Shreyas Iyer maintained his rise with a productive domestic season in all formats of cricket for Mumbai.

The 30-year-old scored total 604 runs in 17 matches in the IPL 2025. His strike rate of 175 was higher than any batter in the top 10 of the Orange Cap list this year.
‘Shreyas Iyer should have been in India Test squad’ : Ganguly
Ganguly told Iyer should have been in England simply because of his current form in all formats. “He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He is not the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do.” Ganguly said to media.
